Squeals of delight and hugs were the order of the morning as campers reunited with friends. Imagine! A whole year had gone by without them seeing each other.
Camp Pride was established sixteen years ago to provide a forum for children living with type 1 diabetes where they could learn to effectively managing the condition, as well as interact with peers experiencing similar challenges. Campers range in age from five to 14 years, and siblings are welcome to attend.
Camp Pride has evolved into Camp PRIDE (Positive Reinforced Innovative Diabetes Education) and this year was convened as a two-week camp under the theme Sweet Sixteen. While we have sessions to revisit areas of diabetes management such as Blood Glucose Monitoring, Role of Insulin, Carbohydrate Counting and Meal Planning, we are cognizant of the need to develop healthy, happy, productive citizens. We engaged external stakeholders, such as the Department of Emergency Management (DEM), the Barbados Fire Service and the National Conservation Commission to expose the campers to vital life and leadership skills. The campers also have time for fun through Art & Craft, Drama and Physical Activities which include Dance and Archery. Over the years, campers enjoyed Fun Days at Divi Southwinds, Hilton Barbados Resort, Rockley Beach (Tiki Bar) and Kendal Sporting, and engaged in water activities such as paddle-boarding and kayaking.
The success of this camp can be largely attributed to our sponsors representing both private and public sectors and the facilitators who readily consent to volunteer their time. Special thanks are expressed to Republic Bank Barbados Ltd., our title sponsor this year, as well as the Ministry of Health and Wellness through the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, which provided daily nursing personnel to ensure the well-being of our campers.
Camp PRIDE must continue as the Diabetes Association of Barbados stands ready to maintain its support and advocacy for the children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes to fulfil their innate potential and become productive citizens of this nation Barbados.
