Statement – Ministry of Education on Grantley Adams Memorial Secondary

The Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training is aware of the issues surrounding the student protests at the Grantley Adams Memorial Secondary School. The acting Minister of Education, Senator Lucille Moe and other Officers from the Ministry of Education visited the school and are satisfied that the correct procedure was followed by the administration of the school as it relates to the removal of the vendors from the school premises.

The Ministry’s first priority must be security of the children and food safety. To this end, the Ministry supports the directives of the administration of the school that students will not be allowed to leave the school premises without permission during the school day.

Health inspectors from the Ministry of Health and Wellness conducted an inspection of the canteen at the Grantley Adams Memorial Secondary School on Wednesday and were satisfied that it met the requisite health standards. The Boards of Management of the Secondary Schools will continue to work with Canteen Concessionaires to ensure that they comply with the requisite food handling standards and that they maintain a high nutritional quality of food served.

Discussions will continue with the Ministry of Health and Wellness to develop a policy document on Nutrition for students that will be shared with all canteen operators.

Parents, guardians and members of the public are asked not to encourage students of any school to disregard the directives of school administration.

We need the cooperation of teachers, students, parents, media and the general public as we work together to enhance the education of children in our schools.

  • Sh it is hitting the fan real hard. It's only six months the crooked BLP reime has been in POWER, and all hell break loose already. What next!

  • There is more than what meets the Eye or in other words there is more in thee mortar than de Pestle at stake here, but thee acting Minister of Education, Senator Lucille Moe ain't got a clue what going on, the Principal and the Chairman tell she what them want she to hear but a lot of dirt in that School

  • BARBADOS (Naked Departure) -- JONATHAN LEWIS (Chairman, Grantley Adams Memorial School) -- Naked, the new chairman of the Grantley Adams Memorial School ('GAMS'), Jonathan Lewis, is creating a nasty scene at the school and in the canteen. The FIRST thing Jonathan Lewis did was to get rid of two vendors who were selling inside the school for over 30 years, and these vendors were paying the school $40.00 a week to be there. The children were happy with these vendors. Now, the children say the NEW VENDOR'S food prices are extremely high, $15.00 and $18.00 (while the older vendors were selling the food from between $2.00 to $6.00). What is Jonathan hoping? That the children prostitute themselves with teachers for lunch money? Naked, the food from this new vendor is stink and makes the children sick with vomiting and belly aches, resulting in the children protesting.

Naked, the new chairman of GAMS has shares in the canteen. It is being operated by one of his friends. He is a staunch Seventh-Day Adventist. This new vendor woman, who goes to his church, is operating the canteen.

His brother, Victor Lewis, who used to teach at the Alleyne School, got involved with a young student at the school which ended in his wife divorcing him. Because of that scandal, he left Barbados and went to work in Canada. Naked, would you believe that Victor came rushing back to Barbados after the BLP won the election and his brother, Jonathan, gave him a job as a teacher, YES, a teacher, for the technical and woodwork department? He is 61 years old. Retired. And is now receiving two pensions! The fact that he is a pedophile should be something brought to the attention of all the parents of students at GAMS!

  • So wait wuh I hearing right? A burger pk dropped from $16 to $10/$12..if this is so this is high class wufflessness. .not even chefette carry those prices, actually none of the fast food restaurants

  • I really hope in all of this someone spoke to the kids. The principal was in his Legal right to lock the gate ; however, if the reports coming from then are true i think this issue needs further investigation and discussion. We as adults if we are not satisfied with a service we go elsewhere so i sympathise with the kids. I am proud of them.

  • Mia Cares but these Renegades don't
Mia and the BLP made all and Sundry believe that they were all for Vending to make an honest living in the Election Campaign and even Illegal vending would be a thing of the past
Mia BLP even giving out $5,000 loans to to start up small business including Vending
But The acting Minister of Education, Senator Lucille Moe and other Officers from the Ministry of Education visited the school and are satisfied that the correct procedure was followed by the administration of the school to run the vendors from the school premises.

Mia all for Vending but Valdez thee Great, thee Chairman and Lucy who having a ball want thee Vendors run from around thee School.
Thee same Vendors who live in the area call on the Useless MP to Mediate a way out so they can continue to sell and support they family and I hear he have nothing to say on the matter I would to see Valdez the Great go on Secondment to the Sewage Plant help sort out the Problems there and leave the people children alone to make their Choices

  • To the officers at the MOE, all you have done is Sprinkle some powder on the sore. You have not dealt with the problems as outlined by the striking students and those are Food Quality and Food Prices to them. Unless those issues are addressed the problems with the students will remain. This is not the time to be backing your employees and ignoring the plight of the "kids" whom you have barred from going to outside vendors. When you bring in a quality controller to taste the food that is being provided, then we will understand that you're making a serious effort to address the needs of the kids.

  • I smell a rat! Is it true that the person who has the concession for the School canteen is affiliated to the same Principal? Just asking.
