Colombian woman faints during court appearance

A Colombian woman, charged with assaulting an immigration officer, fainted during a court appearance at the District ‘A’ Traffic Court on Saturday.

Maria Teresa Solano Marchena, 25, fainted close to the end of the hearing and had to be removed from the building in a stretcher. She was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.

Marchena appeared before Magistrate Graveney Bannister, however, during her entry up the steps, she was grimacing in pain and had to be assisted by her attorneys Michael Lashley, QC, and Danya Taylor-Lavine.

Marchena appeared in court today charged with assaulting immigration officer Carlisle Murray on November 13. Her lawyers said she was injured during the incident on November 13.

The accused was not required to enter a plea to the charge as it is alleged to have occurred in the District ‘C’ jurisdiction.

Three other Colombian women and a Guyanese woman yesterday pleased guilty to the charge and were handed over to immigration for deportation.

Magistrate Bannister denied Marchena bail and deemed her a flight risk.

The court heard that Marchena never applied for an extension after she entered Barbados on April 12, 2017 and was given a three-month stay until July 12, 2017.

Having suffered injuries to her neck and her left side, magistrate Bannister granted a request from Lashley that Marchena receive immediate medical attention at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Bannister said after release from hospital, Marchena is to be remanded to custody.

The case will be transferred to the District ‘C’ St Matthias Court to be heard on Tuesday November 20.

  • Some of these comments are so stupid... Open your eyes and see, do you ever see a Police Geep come to the steps of the Court??? Then look at the lady as she is going up the stairs, Police knew she was injured hence they bring her to the stairs to ease the situation, even murderers they walk out smh... Nonsense about "fake"...

  • @DONALD TRIMP en al; Many bajans are all over the place and have made it, some arrived with out train or bus fare and no place to stay but today they have made it, they got a family and their children have done very well so remember that the white folks were there before you bajans and brought your fore parents some time after.

  • @OSSIE MOORE - "The Tourism industry is the N0.1 industry of Barbados"

I agree but people keep confusing tourism with free movement.

I don't care if you are from Columbia, Guyana, the USA or the UK, if you arrive in Barbados as a tourist without the means to support your stay in Barbados, you should not be allowed to enter and worst of all. if you assault a Barbados Immigration Officer you should be deported immediately.

No el cheapo tourist should be allowed entry into Barbados. If you do not know what el cheapo means, those are tourist arriving with no place to stay, no credit and only $100 in their pockets.

Those type of tourist should not be welcomed in Barbados period.

  • I have a nieghbour that pretends to be disabled when she goes into court she has her cane she can not sit down, her car was down for a while so she stopped walking with the cane,, when she is making noise and fighting with the nieghbour she don't be disabled anymore until is her next court date, you don't to see her in action you would not believe, a lot of them are good at they profession.

  • DONILD TRIMP:
Barbados don’t need these el cheapo type of tourist coming to its shores. White, black, brown, go somewhere else.

Ossie Moore : . . . . .but apparently as long as you have the name "TOURIST " you are always welcomed in Barbados.

The Tourism industry is the N0.1 industry of Barbados what else do you expect ?

  • @ Deborah Small, you are right, the entire world has problems. Unfortunately, an entire nation can be judge by the indifferent behaviour of a few. I guess this woman had a good reason for leaving Columbia, and would prefer not to return. That’s a good enough reason for her not breaking the laws of the Country where she found refuge. Locating to a different Country should be the beginning of a new start, not finding yourself in a situation where you are being escorted into Court by a Police Officer.

  • Deport her backside. You enter a country and break the law, out you go.
I challenge all you bleeding hearts dotish Bajans to visit the USA, the UK or Canada on a holiday and assault an Immigration OFFICER and see what happens.
Barbados don't need these el cheapo type of tourist coming to its shores. White, black, brown, go somewhere else.
