Former champion Simon Proverbs fired early warning shots on the first day of the 2018 RBC Classic at the Barbados Golf Club on Saturday.
Proverbs, the 2012 champion, kept himself among the main contenders with a two-over-par 74 that left him well-positioned to fight with his challengers over the final 18 holes on Sunday.
Driving well and putting well, Proverbs shot 38 on the front nine and then went even par of the back with 36.
Also among the early finishers yesterday were young national player Xzavier Wiggins , who scored 77, and veteran Barbados player Julian Jordan who posted 824
Among the women, veteran Julia Stephenson was being chased by Helen Foster and Gail Fields , who were close behind. Stephenson posted 85 for a one-shot lead over Foster ( 86) while Fields was also a stroke behind Foster on 87.
Some 88 players are contesting The Classic in five divisions and several of the categories are highly competitive, particularly the Seniors and Super Seniors, where experience counts.
Some of the island’s best known cricketers are among those contesting The Classic and they include former West Indies batsman Desmond Haynes, current Barbados captain Shamarh Brooks, veteran Nolan Clarke and former West Indies Player and coach, Otis Gibson.
