Prime Minister Mia Mottley pays tribute to long standing Barbados Labour Party member and former chairman of the Barbados Child Care Board David Joey Harper. Below is the full text of her statement.
He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat’ (from the Battle Hymn of the Republic) was David Joey Harper’s mantra, whether around advocacy or service. His commitment resonated.
Known by all as Joey, his almost thirty-five years of membership in the Barbados Labour Party saw him performing many roles on National Council, as CEO of the Party or carrying the Party flag in the 1991 general election. He was not daunted by differences of opinion and in his eloquent baritone put his argument forward. His was one of those voices which shaped the dialogue at the Annual Conference.
He was an advocate for policies which would bring equity and fair play particularly for children and disadvantaged persons. His service to others was a tangible thing as he served the Barbados Family Planning and the Council for the Disabled at the highest levels, never losing the common touch with his community.
Joey’s sense of humor, his big heart, sharp mind, fluid pen and unwavering dedication remained steadfast to the end and has left an imprint on many lives. He will be missed.
On behalf of the entire Barbados Labour Party family I extend our heartfelt condolences to our comrade sister , his wife Evelina King-Harper and the family.
Rest in Peace Comrade
