Brandon Louis and Tarika Branch walked away with a slew of prizes as Mr & Miss Star Strut 2018 at Queen’s College last Saturday night.
Louis dominated all the segments in Star Strut: The New Age to cop all the awards for the males, receiving People’s Choice Award, Photogenic Award, Runway King, first in Fire and Ice, Leather and Lace and Haute Couture. Birch, who was also a crowd favourite, took home the title as well as People’s Choice, Runway Queen and winner of Fire and Ice and Haute Couture.
Louis’ clean sweep was expected based on the cheers that echoed throughout the Husbands, St James auditorium. There were eight contestants, three males and five females, who graced the stage after two months of gruelling training sessions. The contestants modelled the
designs of Opastuar Nobl by Samuel Gittens, J’amour by Joy Best as well as their conceptualizations for the competition’s theme.
Louis’ confidence, regality and smouldering sex appeal caused an eruption of screams from the teenage girls gathered during the Haute Couture segment. Meanwhile, Birch possessed a grace and poise that left many green with envy.
First runner-up went to the elegant modelesque duo of Jaren Worme and Kaelyn Shockness who towered over the contestants. Meanwhile, Korede Grimes and Reyna-Chantez Walton were second runners up. Walton wowed the audience with her pink gown with hints of kaleidoscope patches during the Haute Couture segment.
The petite Zoe Harris received the Producer’s Award for Most Improved Participant and the Most Photogenic Female Award. Jordan Marshall won the Leather and Lace segment for her exceptional depiction of the theme. Marshall’s design was for that bold and brazen bad girl. She dressed in a black leather coat with red lining on the inside and a patent leather two-piece consisting of a top and skirt with a slit at the sides and woven with a gold metal chain.
During the competition, the audience was treated to performances by the 2018 Junior Monarch Dequon Quon Alleyne, as well as a medley of popular soca hits from the 2017 Mr Star Strut winner Aaron Yearwood. (KK)
