Augustina Hinds is the author of the book Vegan Conscious. The 57-year-old mother told Barbados TODAY that she decided to publish her book this year due to the movement towards healthy, sustainable living.
When asked what was the inspiration to writing her book she said she liked to listen to the wisdom from within. “I knew it was the right time to reach a wider audience with the knowledge I have acquired during my vegan journey. The inspiration behind this book comes from being passionate about all aspects of healthy living and a strong desire to share my discoveries with humanity. I felt the urge to provide a book with information which focuses on total well-being, hence the name Vegan Conscious. Furthermore, I have been a restaurateur for over two decades and I am fortunate to meet wonderful, interesting people who give me encouragement,” she told Barbados TODAY.
Hinds explained that she wrote the book because she wanted to show Barbadians a healthier way of life. “Why a vegan book? I want to highlight how consuming plant-based foods contribute to a healthier way of life. I want to describe techniques for preparing nutritious, tasty and enjoyable vegan meals,” she said, adding that the book’s content is based on research and experimentation.
“The ideas inside the book are the results from embracing a vegan lifestyle, much research and studies as well as experimenting with numerous plant-based foods. In addition, I read a variety of books which helped to fuel my imagination. The experience obtained from teaching Food and Nutrition, conducting vegan workshops, participating in seminars, exhibitions and promotional events also played a vital part in the creation process,” Hinds told Barbados TODAY.
The debut author said her children were integral to the book process, and she credits them for its success. “My children were very supportive, especially when I was using the computer. They taught me easier and better ways for putting everything together. Their photos of our kitchen garden, other plants, and vegan dishes grace some of the pages. My editor, Carol Pitt of Caribbean Chapters Publishing, also provided photos. Carol has unique talents and skills and as a new author, I am grateful for her assistance in the book’s production,” Hinds said, adding that as a new author, the response thus far has been overwhelming.
“Since being a published author, the response has been pleasing, and the book is available in some bookstores. I am happy with the interest people are showing and I appreciate their uplifting comments. Writing the book Vegan Conscious was truly gratifying,” Hinds said.
The writer had some words of encouragement for any new author. “The advice I have for any young author would be to keep a journal for recording your notes as it comes in handy. Recognize and utilize the opportunities that are offered to you; make wise use of your time; stay committed and hold on to your dreams because success comes after extensive effort and work,” Hinds said.
