Some 250 less fortunate persons got their first taste of the season recently when Massy Distribution in association with the Salvation Army hosted a Christmas luncheon especially for them.
The event, held on December 13 at the Salvation Army’s Reed Street headquarters, sought to spread Christmas cheer to those in need while ensuring that they got to sample some traditional Christmas favourites. Catering to the Salvation Army’s regular recipients, which include 50 meals-on-wheels beneficiaries, the staff of Massy Distribution, led by Managing Director Glenn Taylor, served up the yuletide fare.
Noting that this was the fourth annual luncheon as a Massy Distribution driven initiative, Mr Taylor explained that the Massy Group has always championed community involvement and sought to encourage staff volunteerism through these activities. This initiative, which dates back some 12 years as a Massy activity, was previously undertaken by Massy Stores for at least eight years before Massy Distribution took up the responsibility in partnership with Massy United Insurance in 2015 to continue the tradition.
“After our first year, we received such an overwhelming response of gratitude from the persons who benefitted as well as positive and rewarding feedback from the staff who volunteered, that it then became an important part of our annual charitable/community activities,” Taylor said.
In terms of planning the event, he added, “Every year, we contact the Salvation Army to determine a suitable date and then we start to coordinate everything behind the scenes for the function.
“It is a very involved process but, in a nutshell, we supply and coordinate the delivery for the food (which is prepared by Massy Stores) and provide all related supplies. In addition, we organize the cleaning and decorating of the dining space and arrange the necessary health certificates for our staff volunteers who serve the food. It is a tremendous effort, but it is a rewarding experience that we are happy to be part of,” he said. (PR)
