Met office issues a high wind advisory and small craft warning for Barbados

The Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a high-wind advisory and a small craft warning for the island that will take effect from 6 p.m. Friday  until 6 p.m. Monday, December 31.

According to the Met Office, a strengthening western Atlantic high pressure system is expected to generate strong surface winds and above-normal north easterly to easterly sea swells across Barbados during that period.

It noted that wind speeds are likely to be as high as 47 to 61 kilometres-per-hour with higher gusts and sea swells of ten to 13 feet.

The forecasters warn that winds of this magnitude can cause loose objects to become air borne and can topple items such as garbage cans, outdoor furniture, jumping tents and construction material.

The Met Office has advised residents to secure all loose objects and small craft operators and sea bathers to be prepared for large breaking waves and rip tides near beaches.
