On January 22, 2019 the state made it legal for a woman to have an abortion up to a baby’s due date. In other words, “The law allows for abortion at any time throughout pregnancy. And if a child is born alive, after a botched abortion, the born-live child is no longer protected,” (article by Carmen LaBerge, The Christian Post, January 26, 2019, www.christianpost.com) Is this really true? Has this actually happened in one of the leading states in the Union? Indeed, it is true. The state now views human beings – the pinnacle of God’s creation, with the intellect and capacity to think and reason – as lower than the animal kingdom over which they were given dominion! For there is no animal species which seeks to annihilate its offspring. And this is what this law is all about, giving any mother the right to terminate a viable, healthy baby who has been growing within her for nine months! The atmosphere at the formal ceremony of the passage of the bill was a festive one. In fact, Governor Cuomo took the time to celebrate the presence of Sarah Ragle Weddington, the attorney who successfully argued the Roe v Wade case in 1973 before the Supreme Court. Then the governor ordered that New York’s landmarks, including the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, the Alfred E. Smith Building in Albany, and the One World Trade Center’s 408-foot spire be lit in pink “to celebrate this achievement and shine a bright light forward for the rest of the nation to follow.” So, New York is celebrating the future killing of numerous babies. Rather than shining a bright light for the other states to follow, the passing of this piece of legislation is more like digging a tunnel of gloom and beckoning others to follow. We are already aware of the statistics at the present situation as it is. Since the infamous case in 1973, over 61 million babies have been aborted in the US! (www.lifenews.com). With this new law in New York, abortion statistics will no doubt rise astronomically. The new law has now made it legal for a woman to have an abortion after 24 weeks “to protect her health.” So if she views the baby as a threat to her “physical, mental, emotional, social, relational, financial” well-being “then she can request and receive a taxpayer funded abortion in the state of New York.” These are the sordid times in which we live. A child’s life can be terminated right up to its due date – and for whatever reason the mother might have! But thank God, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon. In the State of the Union address, President Trump has taken up the defence of these helpless, tiny human beings. He stated: “To defend the dignity of every person, I am asking the Congress to pass legislation to prohibit the late-term abortion of children who can feel pain in the mother’s womb. Let us work together to build a culture that cherishes innocent life. And let us reaffirm a fundamental truth: all children—born and unborn—are made in the holy image of God,” (www.charismanews.com February 6, 2019).
