The National Cultural Foundation (NCF) is tackling the ongoing issue of crime and violence in Barbados in a creative way.

This year, there will be a special presentation at Junior Kadooment entitled Operation White Dove and it will seek to attract schools in Bridgetown and the environs to be beacons for peace.

The announcement was made at the launch of the NCF School and Community Junior Costume Programme by Schools Programme Coordinator Suzanne Phillips who said the presentation addresses the current spate of violence on the island.

“Basically, it is a message of peace. The presentation may not take the same format as a junior band but the process is going to be the same. We will be going into the schools which are participating, and we will be training [students on] how to produce costumes for that particular section,” she said.

Phillips said the children involved with Operation White Dove will make their own costumes which will depict ‘Peace, Love, and Unity’.

“All of the students who are participating in this special presentation will be playing mas but sending a specific message throughout the entire band. So, it is not that they come on and jump but they are sending a specific message to the community. In a situation like this when the children are leading then we have to listen. We are hoping that this presentation would make the community more aware that there is more we need to do to change the situation as it is in Barbados,” she said. (LG)
