Hayden Walsh with the ball and JP Duminy with the bat captivated home fans as the Barbados Tridents defeated Trinidad and Tobago Knight Riders by 63 runs in their Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) clash at Kensington Oval tonight.

Batting first on winning the toss, the Barbados Tridents made 192 in their 20 overs, propelled by a frenetic 20-ball 65 from Duminy, inclusive of the fastest ever CPL fifty in15 balls. In response, the Knight Riders crumbled to 129 all out in 17.4 overs with Walsh finishing with the impressive figures of 5 for 19 in his four overs.

The victory was an important one for the home side not only from the position of gaining an important two points that took them to fourth on the table with six points, but it marked the end of a losing streak that had seen them lose their previous eight games at Kensington Oval dating back to last year.

JP Duminy hits another ball into the crowd during his scintillating innings. Wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin follows the flight of the ball.

The foundation of the Tridents innings was due to an excellent opening stand of 110 between Johnson Charles (58 in 39 balls) and Jonathan Carter (51 in 46 balls). Carter was promoted to open the innings ahead of Alex Hales who has been in wretched form and who was pushed down to number four in the order. Early in the piece Carter found it difficult to get into stride against the bowling of left-arm spinner Khary Pierre and right-arm quick Ali Khan. Charles, however, was fluent from the start. In Khan’s second over and the fourth of the innings Charles struck him for three boundaries as the speedster conceded 14 runs. Carter was bamboozled by Sunil Narine in the sixth over where he could hardly get bat to ball as the off-spinner completed a maiden.

At the other end Charles continued to find the boundary with a measure of frequency while Carter slowly but surely found his touch.  The innings’ fifty came up off 7.2 overs when Charles struck Knight Riders’ captain Kieron Pollard through the covers for a boundary. Charles brought up his own fifty off the first ball of the 13th over bowled by Pollard, and on the final ball the two brought up their century opening partnership with Carter’s single to mid-wicket. In the following over bowled by Narine, Carter reached his fifty with consecutive boundaries off the first two deliveries. However, Narine struck in the same over when he had Carter caught by a diving Colin Munro at deep mid-wicket off a mistimed pull shot. He had five fours and a six in his innings.

In the 15th over bowled by Pierre, Charles’ excellent innings came to an end when he was caught by Pollard at long-off going for a lofted drive to add to his eight boundaries. Hales’ poor run continued when his sweep shot found Munro at deep square-leg and he was back in the hut for 1. At this stage the Tridents were 116 for 3 in the 15th over and the innings was crying out for some closing momentum. And momentum it got from Duminy. Narine (1 for 19) completed his tight spell by conceding just two runs in his fourth over and the innings’ 16th. That would prove to be the proverbial calm before the storm.

In the 17th over bowled by Pierre Duminy struck the penultimate delivery for six as the Tridents gathered 11 runs from it. Khan was brought back for the 18th over and got an unbelievable hammering. His second ball was hit by Duminy over square leg for six; the third over cover for another six; the fourth to the third man boundary; the fifth over long-on for six. The over went for 24 and off the final ball the left-handed South African ensured he pinched the strike for the 19th over.

The only one that has not beaten Jimmy Neesham in CPL 2019 are his parents. And tonight given one over by Pollard he got another flogging. Duminy struck his first delivery for four; the second for six; the third for six to bring up his 50; the fourth for four; and the fifth for four. Again Duminy pinched the strike with a single off the last ball as the Kiwi conceded 25 runs in the over. The fans at Kensington Oval were absolutely delirious with the batting fireworks.

Duminy hit Pollard’s first ball of the final over for six but was then caught by Narine at extra-cover off the second ball. His departure was met by a standing, cheering ovation, having entertained the crowd with four cracking fours and seven superb sixes. His job, though, was not over as he would return later in the night to have an impact with ball and in the field. Pollard snared captain Jason Holder for a duck in the final over that ended with Raymon Reifer heaving a straight six off the only ball he faced.

The Knight Riders’ innings never really got going, exemplified by Darren Bravo being the top scorer with a relatively pedestrian 28 off 24 balls batting at number five. The only other batsman to pass 20 was Munro who made 23. Most of the damage to the innings came compliments of the ebullient leg-spinner Walsh whose second over and the innings’ 11th basically put the game to bed. Over the course of those six balls he accounted for Pollard off his second; Neesham off his third; and Seekkuge Prasanna off his fifth.

Duminy (2 for 24) chipped in with the wickets of Pierre and Khan, as well as a stupendous straight catch running from long-on and tumbling to complete the dismissal of Munro off Reifer’s bowling.

Duminy’s Man-of-the-Match award was a formality.
