Infuriated that his grandfather was questioning him over missing money 24-year-old Malcolm Jamal Goddard retaliated by beating the elderly man about the body, fracturing his right rib, resulting in a week-long hospital stay.

In the No. 5 Supreme Court today the Oldbury, St Philip resident pleaded not guilty to causing serious bodily harm with intent to maim, disfigure or disable, or to do some serious bodily harm to Cyril Gill, his then 85-year-old grandfather. He however pleaded guilty to unlawfully and maliciously inflicting serious bodily harm on his grandfather on September 4, 2018.

Crown Counsel Neville Watson revealed that Gill, who turned 86 this past July, allowed his grandson to move in with him two years ago at his Oldbury residence.

On September 3, Gill “secured” his money by placing it under his pillow and went to bed. However, when he woke up the following day the money was nowhere to be found. He confronted Goddard and an argument ensued resulting in the young man becoming exasperated.

The situation deteriorated with Goddard beating his elderly grandfather about the body, cuffing him in his face and kicking him for about five minutes when he knocked him to the ground. He then left the residence.

When Gill was able to get up he called the police who responded. He was treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and diagnosed with having “concomitant right rib fractures” as a result of “moderate to severe force”. He was kept at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s Ward B7 for seven days.

Lawmen conducted their initial investigations and returned to the residence on September 12, 2018 around 12:15 a.m. where they came across Goddard and informed him about the report made by his grandfather.

“I ain’t got nothing to say really,” Goddard told police as he declined to give a written statement.

Explaining that he had been residing at the house for “a little while now” Goddard said, he did not have an argument with his grandfather on September 4. “It’s just that little incident that he say I tek up some money belonging to him . . . small money about $30 or so.” When questioned, Goddard also denied knowing where Gill kept his money or taking it.

Goddard said he hit his grandfather because, “He claim I took something belonging to him and he took up a small metal box and hit me in my face.”

He added: “I just held him by his shirt and shake him. I told him I did not want to hit him but he was fighting back so I took up a shoe and hit him.” Goddard however denied kicking Gill.

Following those facts Madam Justice Jacqueline Cornelius heard from a police record keeper that Goddard had nine previous convictions for possession of cocaine, cannabis, loitering and theft as well one from 2015 for stealing money from his grandfather.

Justice Cornelius ordered a pre-sentencing report on the convict including a victim impact statement from the grandfather, and an account of his time spent on remand at Her Majesty’s Prison Dodds.

Goddard who is still remanded, will be back in court on November 28.
