At age 65 Ulric Orlando Layne has not changed from his criminal ways which began back in 1982. And today the Pavilion Road, Bank Hall, St Michael resident’s criminal record climbed to 27 offences after he admitted to two theft charges.
When he appeared before Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant this morning Layne pleaded guilty to stealing two cases of malts worth $120 belonging to Zubair Akoojee on February 22.
Police constable Victoria Taitt told the No. 2 District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court that the co-owner of Premier Holding Sales became suspicious when he saw Layne, who he knows, leaving the establishment. A check of the CCTV footage was made and the known offender was seen putting the item in a bag he was carrying. Police were called in and he admitted to stealing the item and working with an unidentified man.
Officer Taitt also told the court about Layne’s previous convictions saying 16 of them alone was under the Theft Act and that he had two other cases pending before the court for similar offences. She said he had also been missing from court for quite sometime.
“I admit to the fact that I take up one case of malt but they have on the charge that I take two.
“I suffering from heart failure and I would like some rehab because I smoke cocaine,” Layne told the magistrate who questioned why he was taking such a drug when he was battling a serious medical condition.
He responded: “It makes me feel good sometimes.”
Layne then pleaded for help for his drug addiction stating that he had “never had a chance at any rehab place in Barbados”. However, the magistrate said that was untrue.
“A little rehab to change my life. I want to change my life,” Layne further stated.
Layne then said that he was desirous of pleading guilty to the two pending matters. But when the May 3, 2016 charge that he stole $6,000 belonging to Shirley Brathwaite was read the convicted man said, “That one, I don’t know nothing about that one.”
However, he admitted to stealing four picnic hams belonging to Massy Stores on September 10, 2014.
Layne was sentenced to six months in prison on each count which will run consecutively. He was also told to enroll in the prison’s drug rehabilitation programme if he is “really interested”.
