Semi professional cricket will be played domestically for first time when the inaugural Kadooment Twenty20 Cup bowls off on April 17.

The inaugural tournament will be held under the auspices of the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) and will feature six franchise teams.

“What we have done is to basically put together a group of six franchise teams. The Board will meet shortly to ratify and release the names of the teams which will compete in the Kadooment Twenty20 Cup, a six week competition that is scheduled to begin on April 17.  We are hoping the six teams involved in the tournament will comprise of the most talented players available in Barbados,” BCA’s Director of Cricket Steven Leslie told Barbados TODAY.

The matches will be played on Friday nights with at double header on Sunday nights at Kensington Oval.

A new innovation in this tournament will see players and the members of the teams’ backroom staff receive a stipend.

“It is our hope that these stipends along with some other mechanisms would enable us to produce a more discipline cricketer who will be available for other regional franchises and ultimately for the West Indies’ Twenty20 team”, Leslie added.

“There are some challenges at the moment. We are looking to finance it the best way possible from within the BCA, so we are still actively pursuing possible sponsors and owners for the respective franchises. Be that as it may, we are going to do our best with the resources that are available to us to hold a tournament that will capture the attention of the public. While it will not be staged within the perfect setting, this tournament will be an improvement on what took place in previous competitions. We are making every effort within the financial climate to make it as close to being semi professional competition as we can.”

He revealed that the names of the captains, the head coaches and one other official from the teams will be announced at the draft of players on March 17. Once the draft is competed, the teams will go to six venues across the island where they will train in preparation for the tournament.

The director said it is the desire of the BCA to evolve the Kadooment tournament into the marquee Twenty20 tournament in the region with all of the ingredients that goes with the shorter version of the game, including promotion, marketing, music and dancing girls.

Additionally, he said the competition would generate economic activity on the island.

“Our intention is to showcase the cricket talent that we have on the island in an attempt to get them into cricket franchises around the world, but our ultimate goal is to place players into the West Indies Twenty20 squad,” Leslie said.

He disclosed that the regular Twenty20 tournament involving the teams in Elite and First Division and the Twenty20 Shield which the clubs and the schools in the Intermediate and Second Division participate in, will be played simultaneously with the Kadooment Cup.

“While the franchise competition is being played on Friday and Sunday nights, the regular Twentys20 tournament involving the clubs and schools will be played on Saturday. These  tournaments will allow players who were not selected to represent a franchise  to  participate in Twenty20 cricket at the local level. We are hoping to have a festival finals’  day on May 31st  where there will be a triple header of finals hosted at Kensington which will include the Kadooment Final, the Twenty20 Champion final and the Shield final,” he said.
