A 100-hundred member team of intensive care specialists from Cuba is set to arrive in Barbados later today to join the fight against COVID-19.

Minister of Health and Wellness Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Bostic announced the development this morning as he revealed that the country had recorded its first COVID-19 related death of an 81-year-old Barbadian male, who had travelled to the United Kingdom.

The man had underlying medical conditions.

Bostic told a virtual press conference that the Cuban team would provide much needed relief to local medical teams.

“The team would offer respite and support to our medical teams who have been on the frontline treating those with COVID-19 working gruelling hours in the most demanding of circumstances.

“We thank the people and Government of Cuba for their support in this time of great demand for their medical services.” he said.

Back in March, Barbados had finalized a deal with Havana to get the Cuban medication, Interferon,  for the treatment of patients with severe cases of COVID-19.

Cuban Ambassador to Barbados Sergio told Barbados TODAY in an interview on March 26: “We have looked at the possibility of providing pharmaceuticals that we produce in Cuba for several maladies and diseases and in fact, right now for this emergency of the SARS-COV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic we just yesterday were able to finalise and sign a contract for the importation into Barbados of these medical products that are being applied to COVID-19, that is the Interferon,” he said.

The Health Minister also praised local medical workers for their sacrifice and urged Barbadians to adhere to the protocols to curb the spread of infections and thus reduce the pressure on the health system.

“I am very grateful for the medical professionals who at great personal risk to themselves continue to care for and treat those infected with COVID-19 and who provided this gentleman [the 81-year-old man who died] with the best available medical care.

“These brave Barbadians and the other public health staff directly involved in the COVID-19 response and the entire cohort of staff working in the public/private sector to maintain the high quality of care that Barbados has become renowned for deserve our support, our praise and our deepest respect,” said Bostic.
