No pay cuts . . . yet

The pay packets of contracted West Indies cricketers have not been cut. But Cricket West Indies’ (CWI) chief executive officer Johnny Grave says they will be examining various possibilities based on when cricket starts, in the wake of the global disruption to the game and other sports caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“We haven’t reduced salaries yet but are assessing different scenarios based on when we can get cricket back on,” Grave told Barbados TODAY.

With respect to the West Indies tour to England and New Zealand and South Africa’s visit to the region, Grave said he had been holding talks with his counterparts at the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), New Zealand Cricket (NZC) and Cricket South Africa (CSA) and would not know if those fixtures would be given the green light until after a teleconference of the International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive officers is held next week and a meeting of the directors of CWI is held at the end of the month.

“I have spoken to the CEOs of NZC, CSA and the ECB about our upcoming tours. There is an ICC CEOs Committee Teleconference next Thursday (April 24) so I will know if any of tours are to be rescheduled after that call and our Board has met. The directors of the Board are having a teleconference on the 30th of April,” the CEO said.

The West Indies are scheduled to visit England for a three-match Test series from June 4 to 29, while the Kiwis are  slated to play three One-Day Internationals and three Twenty20 Internationals against the West Indies in the region from July 8 to 19, followed by South Africa who will engage the regional team in two Test matches and  five Twenty20  Internationals from July 15 to August 16.

An air of uncertainty now surrounds these tours due to the outbreak of the coronavirus. England’s cricket season has been suspended until May 28 and few are expecting a full resumption after this date. While in the West Indies the virus has forced the cancellation of several sporting events due to several islands in the region being placed under a 24-hour curfew.

Grave disclosed that while the players are under lockdown in their respective countries, they were still expected to remain fit and have been given a fitness routine based on the current situation in their respective islands and the equipment to which they have access. This process is being monitored by the sports science and medical staff of CWI.

According to a source, CWI has parted company with a long-standing member of its marketing and communications department. Grave acknowledged that some contracts within CWI’s secretariat have not been renewed but stressed there had been no staff cuts at the Antigua-based office.

“Some contracts have not been renewed in the past few months and we had some members of staff retire who haven’t been replaced yet, but certainly none related to COVID-19 yet. The Board has established a Finance Strategy Review Committee which is working with management to assess the various scenarios and assess the financial impact and then make recommendations to the Board. Hopefully, the committee’s first meeting will be next week,” Grave said.
