Kavan Jackman has won the Barbados Statistical Service’s (BSS) 2020 Population and Housing Census logo competition.

The 34-year-old welder who captured the $5,000 prize in the winner-takes-all contest, said even though he was shocked that he had won, he gave credit to his wife Diosa Jackman for giving him inspiration.

Jackman disclosed that he and his wife decided to enter the competition when it was announced back in December last year.

The public was invited to submit logo designs to represent the BSS’ upcoming Population and Housing Census. Logos were required to include the slogan Our Nation, Our Future, Be Counted.

“It was an opportunity for my wife and I to flex our creative muscles on a national level. We bounced ideas off each other and separately submitted our strongest designs. Although we competed against each other, this feels like a win for both of us,” he said.

Mr Jackman explained the concept of the winning logo: “Form shapes were used to represent a three-person nuclear family. They emerge from a blue outline of Barbados, while a blue flowing ribbon is wrapped around the island. This speaks to the inclusivity of the census process for individuals who live here. The dots represent key points that highlight important moments in the process and illustrate the idea that there’s no defined beginning or end. The national colour palette was used but with gradients for creative effect.”

All submissions were reviewed by the Census Publicity Committee of the BSS. Chairman of the committee Senior Statistician Katrina Reid along with Director of the BSS Aubrey Browne extended congratulations to Jackman, and expressed sincere appreciation to everyone who participated in the competition.

Indicating that the winning logo will be used in all branding related to the 2020 Population and Housing Census, both Browne and Reid urged the public to participate in the upcoming census.

“It is important to relay your life experiences through the 2020 Census since this informs funding for services such as school programmes, health clinics, recreational facilities, among other things,” Reid said.

“It is also necessary for the public to know that responding to the 2020 Census is not only safe, but extremely important to Our Nation, Our Future, so Be Counted,” Browne added. (BGIS)
