The Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) is assisting in the local fight against the COVID-19 pandemic by providing support to tourism industry employees, Government, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), the Harrison’s Point Isolation Centre, the Paragon Facility and charitable agencies, among others.

Chairman Stephen Austin explained that the BHTA’s COVID-19 Assistance Programme is being executed in a number of phases: “We started in March with our own employees for phase one, which saw member properties and businesses providing care packages including food supplies and cleaning products to their team members.

“Our membership also donated food supplies and linens including bed sheets, pillow cases and face and hand towels to the QEH, the Paragon facility and a number of charities across the island.  For phase two, the BHTA donated critical supplies including 80 beds as well as pillows and linens to Harrison’s Point.

“In this second-phase our members also donated a wide range of items to assist with the cafeteria at Harrison’s Point including serving utensils, tables, table cloths, chafing pan sets, warming sets and juice dispensers.”

Austin explained that the BHTA has been in continuous discussion with Government, the Ministry of Health, the QEH and the other agencies to ascertain where help is needed and has focused efforts in these areas.

He added, “This pandemic is affecting the entire country and at the BHTA we are very aware that we all have to play our part. We all have to work together in this fight and so we are committed to providing support wherever we can. As time goes on we will execute the other phases of the programme accordingly.

“COVID-19 has stripped us down and allowed many to realize that we have minimal control over these current circumstances. However, we have control of how we respond to challenges, control of our faith and of the brightness of our hope for a better tomorrow.”

Austin also thanked everyone working on the front line during these difficult times: “To all those who have been working tirelessly to help us combat this virus over the past few months, we sincerely thank you. From our essential workers who go unrecognized – our doctors, nurses, all health care professionals, cleaners, supermarket workers, shopkeepers, members of the Royal Barbados Police Force and the Barbados Defence Force – to our Prime Minister and Government officials, we say thank you for your commitment, hard-work and dedication.

“We are truly one Barbados and we are all looking towards brighter and more productive days. Our very own Minister of Health so aptly summed up the resilience of every Barbadian with these words – ‘No retreat, no surrender’. We can only fight this battle together as a people, as a strong nation, to help change the world into a better place for us all. This too shall pass. There is light at the end of the tunnel. May God continue to bless and protect us all.”
