Squash is a sport played with a racket and ball where two players or four (in case of doubles) alternate in striking the ball on to the four walls. The objective while playing squash is to ensure that you hit the ball in such a way that your opponent is unable to make a valid return shot.
Barbados TODAY will feature some of Barbados’ outstanding squash players over the next few days. In today’s edition is Alex Stewart, one of the most talented junior players in the country who continues to make his mark in the sport.

What school do you attend?
The St. Michael School.
At what age did you start to play squash?
8 years old.
What or who inspired you to play squash?
I told my current coach when I was 8 years old that I was going to beat him at squash. It was a bet and so I played him and I lost but since that day I had a thirst for more and I haven’t looked back since.
How many days a week do you normally spend training?
Who is your coach? Where do you often train?
My coach is Shawn Simpson. I play at the Barbados Squash Club.
Have you had the privilege of representing Barbados at any regional or international tournaments?
I have represented Barbados at the 2016 – 2019 Caribbean Area Squash Association Junior Championships (CASA) and the Canadian and US Junior Squash Open.

What is your favourite shot?
Cross court volley.
Who is your favourite squash player?
Are there any goals you have in mind that you would like to accomplish in the sport?
To win my age group at the Canadian and US Junior Squash Open.
Besides squash are there any other sports that you play?
Cricket and tennis.
What do you see as your greatest accomplishment so far in squash?
In squash, winning the 2016 CASA Boys U-11 Championship for Barbados.
What are your plans for your sport of squash in the future?
To play squash at the professional level.
What would you say to a child or adult to encourage them to choose squash as a sport?
