Confessed drug addict gets prison time

Shawn Omar Hinkson of Pavilion Road, Bank Hall, St Michael has been jailed in connection with four burglary charges. He has been slapped with a 12-month sentence on each charge to run consecutively.

The 35-year-old PSV conductor who said he has a drug addiction appeared in the  District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court today and pleaded guilty to entering the house of Edmond Byran as a trespasser and stealing a TV and DVD player worth $1 600 on March 19, 2018.

He also admitted that between August 21 and 27 he entered the Counter Servicing Department at the General Post office and stole a fan and a microwave worth $560 the property of the Crown. He also pleaded guilty to entering the house of Calvin Scantlebury where he stole a television and remote for 800 and entering the home of Ramrattie Gobin with intent to steal.

At the latter’s home, Hinkson was discovered with his body half way through the kitchen window. He made his escape when the homeowner started shouting at him.

In the case involving Scantlebury the homeowner woke up to use the bathroom when he saw Hinskon coming down the stairs to the back of his house with the items. The man’s nephew intercepted Hinkson who dropped the items.

With regard to the burglary at Bryan’s apartment, the complainant discovered the items missing after returning home.

Station Sergeant Cameron Gibbons further revealed that renovations are currently taking place at the General Post Office. Security was making the rounds when they noticed the burglar exiting the building through a broken glass door with a large bar. Hinkson ran off when the guards shouted at him, dropping the items before making his escape.

“I need a lil help. I ain’t come to waste no time. I begging for a little leniency. I have a drug addiction, I would like some rehab at Verdun House. I want to change my life that is the honest truth”, said Hinkson, who is known to the court.

However, Magistrate Manila Renee informed him that the prison offered such help and he would be sentenced to 12 months at Dodds on each offence to run consecutively.
