The Small Business Association of Barbados (SBA) has a new president. Neil Corbin, owner of the manufacturing firm NPURE Water Filtration Inc. and the service business The Telephone Repair, was elected by an overwhelming majority at the association’s Annual General Meeting on Thursday.

The virtual AGM was a first for the SBA, the format necessitated by the restriction on physical gatherings on account of the COVID-19 pandemic. Other persons elected to the Board were Erica Smith as secretary, Davidson Ishmael as assistant secretary/treasurer and Stephen Ollivierre as director.

These will join the existing members of the Board, Charles Carter, vice president; Drayton Carter, treasurer and Dave Waithe, director.

The new president was extremely humbled at the show of confidence reposed in him by the membership and expressed his desire to ensure this confidence was fulfilled. Corbin remarked that “there is much to be done within the small business sector, particularly at this time of economic hardship occasioned in part by the COVID-19 pandemic”.

The new president confirmed that he will build on the work done by previous presidents and continue to support the secretariat in the roll out of relevant programmes for members and the MSME sector at large.

At the AGM, SBA members discussed various matters pertaining to the business of the association, highlighted in the 2020 Annual Report and Treasurer’s Report for the period. Additionally, the audited financial statements for financial year 2019 – 2020 was presented by audit firm Brian Griffith and Co. Chartered Accountants, which gave the association a clean bill of health.

The AGM was a feature of the Small Business Week 2020 activities, which was held from September 20 – 26.

The week culminates with a virtual Awards ceremony on Friday. (PR)
