The top three St Bartholomew Primary School students in this year’s Barbados Secondary School Entrance Examination (BSSEE) have been rewarded for their outstanding performances.

Member of Parliament for Christ Church East Wilfred Abrahams today presented a laptop to each of them: Most Outstanding Student Lanisha Alkins who received 99 per cent in Mathematics, 89 per cent in English and a B in Composition; Most Improved and Most Outstanding Boy Jelani Ward who scored 99 per cent in Mathematics and 89 per cent in English, with a C in Composition; and Koviah Burke who scored 96 per cent in Mathematics, 85 per cent in English and a B in Composition. Ward and Burke are now students of Harrison College, while Alkins is attending The St Michael School.

Abrahams said that because of his relationship with families in the area as well as the school’s principal who assured him that the students can perform well once the institution is provided with needed resources, he decided to ensure that every single Class 4 student had a device during the national shutdown so they could participate in online classes.

He said the presentation of laptops today was in fulfilment of a promise he made to the students at this year’s schools sports.

Abrahams encouraged the students to continue striving for excellence and focusing on accomplishing great things in life. He also commended the parents of the students for the effort and work they put into their wards.

“Madame principal, I will ensure that you have what you need to do what you have to do and we will pray that St Bartholomew keeps getting the results that it has and that these children can stand and look back and say that ‘we were those three who surpassed everybody’s expectations and turned around the fortunes of our primary school’,” Abrahams said.

Meanwhile, principal Dr Hyacinth Harris reported that all the students at the institution performed well in this year’s BSSEE.

Of the 16 students who set the exam, two scored 99 per cent in Mathematics, one scored 96 per cent, nine scored between 66 per cent and 88 per cent, while the other four scored below 50 per cent.

In English, only two students scored below 50 per cent, their scores being 36 and 39 percent. The other 14 students all scored between 53 per cent and 89 per cent.

“As a result of these scores, our school has performed above the national mean in both subjects this year. The national mean in English this year is 69.25 per cent. Our mean is 71.62, a difference of 2.37. In Mathematics, the national mean this year is 58.24. Our mean is 65.19, 6.95 percentage points higher,” she said.

The principal noted that in the past year, students have worked hard along with their teachers, always cognisant that they were operating in the COVID-19 environment and the difficulties that existed in the online teaching environment.

However, she said the three weeks the Class 4 students returned to school were significant and meant that teachers had to double their efforts, and were pleased that their results paid off.

“This particular group of students was being monitored from Reception and I continue to collect data on their performance. I recognised from reception that they were doing well and the individuals who taught these students were selected specifically to teach them because I knew the potential that the students had. And so, the results this year were not a surprise to us,” she said.

Harris thanked Abrahams for continuing to support the school and for making the generous presentation to the past students. anestahenry@barbadostoday.bb
