The Ellerslie School has been temporarily closed following the announcement today that a student there has tested positive for COVID-19.

Minister of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, Santia Bradshaw announced the closure Sunday evening.

She said the closure will last for 14 days from Monday, October 5.

Classes will resume on Monday, October 19.

“During this time we are asking all students, parents and teachers to cooperate fully with the Ministry of Health officials as they continue to do contact tracing,” Bradshaw said.

“Students must, wherever possible, remain at home and parents should contact the Ministry of Health and Wellness hotline in the event that they develop symptoms of any kind associated with COVID-19.”

Bradshaw said it is the Ministry’s intention “to thoroughly clean the school plant before the return to school”.

That cleaning will start from this week, she said.

The affected student is 15 years old and is in 5th form.

“From all reports received thus far she is doing well,” Bradshaw said.

“I would want, on behalf of the Ministry of Education, to wish her a speedy recovery as I am sure she is anxious to return to school as quickly as possible.

“I would also want to extend best wishes to her her family as well because I know that they too have been affected by COVID-19 at this point in time,” Bradshaw added.
