Prime Minister Mia Mottley was among several Caribbean leaders sending best wishes to United States President Donald Trump who was hospitalized with COVID-19 but has returned to the White House although he is still infectious and not cleared of the virus.
According to News Americas Now News Network, Mottley was one of four Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government wishing Trump and the First Lady Melania a speedy recovery.
Trump, who is in the midst of a heated re-election bid against Democratic nominee Joe Biden, was warded at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Maryland last Friday but left the facility on Sunday night, returning to his official residence.
Mottley tweeted: “On behalf of the Government and people of Barbados, I wish to extend my very best wishes to President @POTUS Trump @realDonaldTrump and the First Lady of the United States @FLOTUS of America for a speedy recovery from the corona virus”.
Guyana’s new President, Mohamed Irfaan Ali wrote in a letter to the US President: “I convey on behalf of the Government and people of Guyana, and on my own behalf, our best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery to you and First Lady Melania Trump.”
Dr Hubert Minnis, the Prime Minister of The Bahamas, also tweeted: “On behalf of the Government and people of The Bahamas I wish to convey our best wishes to @POTUS and @FLOTUS for a speedy recovery. We join the people of the United States in offering our prayers and solidarity during this difficult and challenging time.”
Trump got two sets of well-wishes from officials in Jamaica.
“I wish @POTUS and @FLOTUS best wishes and a very speedy and complete recovery,” read a tweet from Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith posted a similar message on the same social media platform: “I know Jamaica joins me in wishing President Trump and First Lady Melania a full and speedy recovery. I am also pleased that VP @Mike_Pence, @SecPompeo and their wives continue in good health. #COVID19 throws new challenges at the world each day, but we will triumph together.”
President Trump left the hospital in an SUV, past supporters cheering him on outside Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, even as many slammed him for the decision to leave the facility.
Doctors also reported that Trump, while exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms, had experienced two episodes of “transient drops” in his oxygen saturation.
The US COVID-19 death toll reached 214 000 the day Trump left the hospital, and infections have risen to 7.6 million.
