The following is the full text of the Independence Day Message by Verla De Peiza, President, Democratic Labour Party
Fellow Barbadians
Our country has reached its middle age and at the same time faces unprecedented challenges. But, like diamonds, the best results are achieved under pressure.
Covid has afforded us as a country the opportunity to think deeply about the type and quality of society and economy we expect. For certain, it must be one that is sustainable and dependable, not just promoting dependence.
So let us now move our independence beyond the positioning of symbols, to the development of a society whose focus is on the advancement of community and whose purpose is tangibly felt and experienced by its people. Our flag flies free; our minds must now follow. May the pride we feel in our patriotism ignite a fire of industry, and make the coming year our best one ever.
Happy Independence to all from the Democratic Labour Party.
Verla De Peiza
President, DLP
