Minister of Health Lt Col Jeffrey Bostic has publicly apologised for a backlog of COVID-19 test results.

The minister told a news conference on Tuesday that the delay was caused by the increased number of travellers due to the winter season, putting additional pressure on the Best-dos Santos Lab to produce results within 48 hours.

Lt. Col. Bostic said: “This has resulted in some delays with the processing of tests and the dissemination of test results.

“We are not happy with the current situation because we believe in excellence.

“We believe that we can do better. We believe that even with the increase in numbers that we can still provide results within a 24-hour period. But in order to do so, we need additional resources.”

The health minister apologised to all those affected by the delays.

He told the media: “What I would like to do at this stage is to apologise to all persons who might have been affected or impacted by this.

“We try; it is not a perfect system and we are open to enhancing whatever we do to make things better as we have been doing throughout the life of this pandemic.”

Lt. Col. Bostic gave an assurance that additional resources will be deployed and the situation will be rectified in short order.

He said: “We have been able to gather some additional resources at the technical level at the lab and also for persons to do some data entry for us in order to elevate some of the challenges.

“We have also rolled out an app… which allows us to do things in real time. We have almost completed all of the training with the polyclinics in order to get that system going. We are bent on doing better.”

He continued: “I can give the assurance that within a few days, with all the resources we now have at our disposal including the intent to take the lab to a 24-hour system by hiring additional staff and training additional staff that we will be able to do what is required to produce results within a 24-hour period.”
