Sagicor donates to Angel Tree Programme

In a time of COVID, real-life angels are needed more than ever. This is why leading financial services entity Sagicor recently teamed up with non-profit organisation, Prison Fellowship Barbados, to support their annual Angel Tree Programme – an initiative which oversees the donation of gifts to the children of inmates.

Sagicor team members from across the Group donated several wrapped gifts to boys and girls of varying ages and officially handed them over on Tuesday, December 22nd at their Collymore Rock location, just in time for Christmas.

In thanking Sagicor for their support, Executive Director of Prison Fellowship Barbados Neil Dowden shared that corporate donations had dwindled this year due to COVID.

“Donations from businesses are usually forthcoming, and we want to thank those companies who would have helped us over the years.

“This year, because of COVID, a number of businesses are struggling and donations to the programme are not as robust as in previous years, but Sagicor stepped in to assist and we are pleased that they did.

“When the children see companies like Sagicor helping, they are heartened. This is not the first time they have supported us as they also made donations towards our back-to-school drive earlier this year.”

He also noted that the Fellowship is in further talks with the insurer to see how they can offer additional assistance to the inmates with sessions on financial planning and CV preparation as part of their rehabilitation.

Sagicor’s Executive Vice-President and General Manager Paul Inniss said the team responded well to the initiative, which fell under the umbrella of the company’s Project Kindness initiative.

“Christmas is a time for us to be our brother’s keeper and COVID has reinforced this even more,” he said. “Children always hold a special place, and so our team members were moved to donate.

“We are happy that we were able to bring some cheer at this time and hope that we helped to brighten Christmas for the little ones,” he said.

This year, fellowship volunteers distributed gift and food vouchers to more than 500 children. (PR)
