The Ministry of Health and the National Union of Public Workers were holding a second round of talks late Monday to settle a number of grievances among nurses in the public service.

NUPW officials and the leader of the Unity Workers Union, Senator Caswell Franklyn, met with nurses at the Winston Scott Polyclinic over a number of issues earlier today.

Emerging from those talks, Senator Franklyn told Barbados TODAY that health authorities and the NUPW were set to meet at 2 p.m.

But he said he would not be part of the discussions and declined to give further details saying he “would not prejudice the talks”.

He said there were issues to be resolved and that he was hopeful for a resolution.

Barbados TODAY later learned that the issues were aired at the 2 p.m meeting but no solutions were reached and the two sides agreed to resume talks later Monday evening.

A source close to the talks told Barbados TODAY the issues raised did not only relate to hazard pay, which had triggered brief work stoppages by health care workers last Friday at several polyclinics, the Geriatric Hospital and the Psychiatric hospital.

There are also issues relating to long hours, staff shortages and payment for the two recent public holidays observed on Monday, January 4 and Tuesday, January 5, announced by Prime Minister Mia Mottley as the country took action to contain an outbreak of the coronavirus, the source added. (SD)
