Cotton harvesting in Barbados will be further delayed due to the period of national pause, from Wednesday, February 3, to Wednesday, February 17.
Word of this has come from Agronomist at the Barbados Agricultural Management Company (BAMC), Nyah Nyhathu, who said that the delay to the start of cotton picking on Friday, January 22, at Searles Farm, Newton, Christ Church, was as a result of recent heavy rainfall.
In expressing regret at the extended delay, Mr. Nyhathu noted that all individuals who had registered to pick cotton would be contacted at the end of the “national pause”, and would be instructed on the way forward for cotton harvesting.
Urging them not to worry, he said they may have the added benefit of not only picking cotton at the Searles Farm, but at the Wakefield location. “The restart of the season will see COVID-19 protocols in field, where we can socially distance the public up to 12 feet,” he added.
The BAMC is responsible for fields located at: Searles Farm, Newton, Christ Church; Constant Farm, Dash Valley, St. George; Mt. Pleasant Farm, Parish Land, St. Philip; Three Houses Farm, Fortesque, St. Phillip; Redland Farm, Wakefield, St. John; Rock Hall Farm, Four Hill, St Peter, and Bromefield Farm, Harrison, St. Lucy.
