Work on the Highway One Rehabilitation Programme continues to move at a steady pace, and according to Minister of Transport and Works Ian Gooding-Edghill, he is pleased with what has been done so far.

During an unplanned site visit on Saturday, the Minister along with Permanent Secretary Michael Wason and other ministry officials, toured Section 5 of the project at Sunset Crest, St James, to assess the work being done by the Infra contractors.

Speaking with Barbados TODAY, the Minister said the contractors were currently working on the sidewalks to be placed in the area, and confirmed that more pipes for the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) have to be laid.

“As you can see, the contractors are busy at work implementing the sidewalk, and they are preparing to take the sidewalk all the way through in this section. A lot of the pipes have been laid in this particular section, it’s just a section [closer] to the Holetown area, where we have to lay addition pipes, but I am very pleased with the progress thus far,” he said.

“We have made tremendous strides on the seaside, and the contractors are using this period during the [national] pause, to execute additional works on the landside, and we are very pleased with their progress as I have said.”

Gooding-Edghill also revealed, that he was pleased with the COVID-19 measures implemented on site by the contractors, as the country seeks to stop the spread of the deadly virus.

“If you look in this general direction, you will see a sanitization station, and there are multiple stations on this stretch of this particular section, provided by the contractors. Section 5 being executed by Infra, and they have stations along here,” he said.

The Minister also thanked residents in the area for their patience and understanding, noting that the works will be completed in the shortest time period possible, in order to return normal activity to the area.

Currently, around 100 people are working on Section 5 of the project during the two weeks of lockdown on the island. (SB)
