Dr Lorde: ‘Take the jab, hear?’

Declaring he will take the COVID-19 vaccine which he has described as the only bullet to take out the coronavirus, prominent family physician Dr Adrian Lorde has urged Barbadians to join him.

Dr Lorde said: “Studies have shown that if you take one jab now and one in 12 weeks effectiveness is extremely good, almost as good as those other vaccines.

“So when offered, go ahead and get your vaccine. Let’s wait and see how these vaccines are going to be rolled out. I don’t like needles, but if it is going to stop me from lying down at Harrison’s Point and a mask on my face lying face down, I would take it.”

On Sunday evening, National Co-Coordinator of the National COVID-19 Vaccination Campaign Dr Elizabeth Ferdinand, a retired chief medical officer, said Barbados is set to receive about 100,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine later this week. The vaccine has already been rolled out in some of the world’s largest countries and is deemed to be “safe and suitable”.

In the latest of his weekly social media videos, Dr Lorde said studies have shown that the AstraZeneca vaccine is effective, though it might not be as effective as the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine which he said Barbados cannot import due to a lack of adequate storage capacity.

He said studies have also shown that people who have received the AstraZeneca jab are 67 per cent less likely to pass COVID-19 to others.

But the doctor advised that pregnant women should not take the vaccine. He noted that while there has been discussion about persons having allergic reactions to the vaccine, he advised that, only people with severe allergies should not take it.

“You only don’t take it if you have severe allergies that would cause your mouth to swell up and your lips and tongue to be swollen, your throat to be swollen and you can’t swallow and you have to get a jab to stop that from happening,” he said.

Dr Lorde also issued a reminder that while there has been international debate on the effectiveness of the vaccine against the South African variant of COVID-19, that particular variant is not in Barbados. He said a learning process has to take place as Barbados rolls out the vaccine.

“They found that persons over 70 who have been given it have shown some immunogenicity, which is the body’s ability to fight off the virus. So take the vaccine, hear?. You ain’t got to pay for it neither. Our Government has procured it and it is being rolled out. What I don’t know is how my mother is going to get it because she can’t go anywhere and she is 97. So you got to tell me if they are going to go to the various nursing homes and give it to the elderly.

“We are vulnerable. A lot of people out there have hypertension and diabetes and heart disease and cancers and a lot of immune-compromised people and they are going to get it too. Under 18, no not yet. So let us prevent further variants from happening, take the vaccine when it is offered to you.  But listen, you still got to wear your mask, sanitize, physical distance and keep away from large gatherings.” (AH)
