Local NewsNews Ministry of Health issues statement on the timing of the second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine by Barbados Today 04/03/2021 written by Barbados Today 04/03/2021 1 min read A+A- Reset Share FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappThreadsBlueskyEmail 232 The Ministry of Health and Wellness is informing all Barbadians and permanent residents who received their first dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine that the second dose or booster will be due in 10 to 12 weeks (from the date of first injection). This is based on new, scientific information from AstraZeneca indicating the efficacy of the vaccine is significantly increased if there is a longer period between the first and second dose. Therefore, the Ministry of Health and Wellness will be implementing the booster dose from April 26, 2021. We are aware that at the time of their vaccination, some persons would have been given a date to receive their second dose. Some of these dates may change and more details will be given soon. The Ministry of Health and Wellness takes this opportunity to assure the public of the safety of the vaccines sourced on the international market, and thanks them for their overwhelming support of the National Vaccination Programme, so far. New vaccines are expected on the island this week to give further impetus to the programme, and all Barbadians and permanent residents are encouraged to be vaccinated using the registration and appointment system. The COVID-19 vaccine will continue to be free of cost at the point of delivery, but a fund will soon be set up so that persons who wish to make a contribution to the national vaccination effort may do so.
