The home invasion in February 2020 that left Canadian visitor Kenneth Elliot paralyzed was committed by teenagers who were seeking to get “quick money”.

When suspect Alexander Patrick Alleyne, of Ealing Grove Gardens, Christ Church was interviewed by police in March that same year he told them, “My intention was not to hurt anyone but just to get money, jewellery or anything valuable.”

His accomplice Travis Orin Campbell, of no fixed place of abode, said, “ I saw it as an opportunity, I was out of a job and I just thought it would be a chance to get a little money in my pocket.”

The two who were 19 at the time, were being interviewed then in connection with aggravated burglary and use of an illegal firearm.

Recently in the No. 4 Supreme Court before Madam Justice Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell, Alleyne and Campbell, who have been on remand for just over 365 days, admitted that on February 22, 2020 they trespassed in the Christ Church residence where Robert Elliott was staying with intent to steal while armed with a cutlass and firearm. They also took responsibility for unlawfully and maliciously wounding Kenneth Elliott with intent to cause him serious bodily harm or to maim, disfigure or to disable him on the same day. The two pleaded guilty to using a firearm when they did not have the required licence.

Today, during a virtual sitting of Court, Crown Counsel Kevin Forde gave the details of what took place the night.

The two met up and Campbell asked Alleyne if he wanted to make “some quick money”. He told Alleyne he knew where “some white people were living” and saw then with cases of drinks and having a barbeque. After agreeing to rob the residence where the Elliots’ were staying with their partners, Alleyne informed Campbell that they could arm themselves with swords but Campbell stated he was not going to get involved unless he was “strapped”.

They dressed, masked themselves – one in a sock hat, the other with a shirt and approached the house.

Around 9 p.m. Kenneth was playing a game of scrabble with his brother in the living room while one of the ladies was on the patio having a cigarette and the other was in the kitchen getting a beverage.

The lady on the patio saw the two men walking in the direction of the house, wearing hoodies and masks.

The Crown’s prosecutor said she saw Campbell carrying a black gun and Alleyne an orange-handled machete. She ran.

Alleyne, in a written statement, said Campbell alias Dark Man entered the house first and he came in after.

“That is when he pull de gun . . .  before we could say anything the two men attacked us and we were shouting. I was scuffling with one of de men trying to get away.  Dark Man shot one of the men and I lost my sword de same time. I then realize that he was already through de door. Dark Man then shouted ‘let we move’ and I ran and jumped over de gallery wall,” Alleyne wrote. He said he subsequently met up with his accomplice who slept over at his house and left early in the next morning.

“My intention was not to hurt anyone but just to get money, jewellery or anything valuable,” he added.

Campbell meanwhile refused to give police a written statement but he stated when questioned that he went to Silver Sands, as was the norm on weekends, and met with his friend Alleyne who he only knew as Lab.

“I see a rental house, or a vacation rental house was open and the doors was open. I ask Lab if it have visitors staying there and he told me ‘yeah’. So I decided that we would go and rob them. I asked Lab if he got any tools that we can use and he said ‘yes’. I don’t know here he went but he went and get a cutlass and a firearm and I took the firearm.

“We rush inside and try to rob them but they retaliated and I panicked and my hand was on the trigger and I accidentally shot the tourist.

“I saw it as an opportunity. I was out of a job and I just thought it would be a chance to get a little money in my pocket. I take the gun because I thought it was an easier way for them to declare their stuff,” Campbell told lawmen.

Regarding his approached to the house, he said: “I see a woman ran inside and start to scream and everybody else in the house start to freak out too. The two men at the table get up and start running at me, while I was in shock. I accidently shot one of the tourists and fled the scene out of fear.”

Pre-sentencing reports have been ordered on the two men who are represented by attorney-at-law Ryan Moseley.

The attorneys will reappear before Justice Smith-Bovell on May 14 to make submissions on sentencing.
