Reputed thief David Alleyne Pryme has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for a slew of thefts and loitering with intent to steal.

Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes handed down the sentence on Pryme who was recorded as having no fixed place of abode but on previous charges had a Bottom Close, Wildey, St Michael address.

The 55-year-old had built up a reputation as a thief with over 43 prior convictions, the majority of them under the Theft Act, the court heard.

Pryme pleaded guilty to stealing a television worth $229 and a cable box belonging to the Regency Cove Hotel, Hastings, Christ Church between March 7 and 8. He was caught on CCTV taking the items.

He was sentenced to six months for the theft but another six-month sentence to run consecutively was imposed for loitering on Rendezvous Hill on April 7 with intent to steal, being a reputed thief. Six-month sentences to run concurrently were handed down after entering guilty pleas for stealing a $210 trolley belonging to Marlon Brathwaite between March 28 and 29; taking two dumbbells worth $240 from James Masse Dowd on March 26; and four chickens worth $108 belonging to Coral Hinkson between March 5 and 6.

The prosecution had also told the court that Pryme had failed to appear before the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court since 2018 in connection with other pending charges.

After telling the Chief Magistrate that he had missed the dates because he was employed at the time, Pryme threw in the towel and admitted to another series of thefts committed in 2017.

He pleaded guilty to stealing a shirt, a first aid kit and $2 cash belonging to Angela Meredith totalling $82 between April 29 and May 3; and stealing hatchet and scissors worth $33 belonging to Hallam White between June 1 and 2. Six-month concurrent prison times were also imposed on those offences.
