Claiming that “people were waiting to kill” him, a St Andrew man decided he would rather go on remand than apply for bail on a wounding charge, the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court heard Monday.
Clive Connor Lynch, 66, of Cane Garden is accused of unlawfully and maliciously wounding Jean Agatha Forde with intent to maim, disfigure or disable her or to do some serious bodily harm by orchestrating a knife attack on her on April 9.
Lynch walked into court with the aid of two walking sticks. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge when he appeared before Magistrate Alison Burke and will have to face judge and jury in the High Court.
Police prosecutor Constable Ralph Rollock objected to bail based on the seriousness of the offence and the fact that it took place in the “full view” of the public at a bus terminal.
The prosecutor also submitted that the accused had prior convictions for similar offences which showed that he had a propensity to commit “this type of violent behaviour”.
The Crown also feared Lynch would re-offend if granted bail at this time given that he and the complainant in the matter resided in the same area and had consistent interactions.
PC Rollock told the court: “This offence occurred in the public view. He didn’t care. It was his intention to harm the VC (virtual complainant) in public view.”
But Lynch told the magistrate that he did not need bail at this time.
He said: “Even if I get bail there are people out there waiting to kill me . . . and you see the state I am in, I can’t defend myself. So even if I get bail people out there to kill me.”
The accused who was not represented by a lawyer was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison Dodds until May 10.
