Military-grade rifle, man captured in Christ Church

A high-powered assault rifle has been recovered and a man taken into custody following a police operation Wednesday night in Sargeants Village, Christ Church.

Police said they received a report around 8:55 p.m., that four men were acting suspiciously in the area.

When officers arrived, they encountered the men, one of whom was armed with a Russian-made AK-47 assault rifle. The gunman pointed the firearm at officers who fired their weapons in an effort to defend themselves, police said.

As the armed man attempted to escape he dropped the gun, they said. Officers gave pursuit and caught both man and rifle, they added.

The man was also searched and four rounds of ammunition were found in his possession, according to police. The other three men fled across a bushy area and were able to escape, they said.

Police have appealed to the public for any information that can assist detectives by contacting the Hasting/Worthing Police Station at 430-7608/7614, Police Emergency at 211, Crime Stoppers at 1 800-TIPS (8477), or any police station.
