The Roving Response Team paused from a weekend of road clearing, roof repair and assistance to people in distress to lay to rest a beloved former leader who was at the forefront of the first-responders charity for the last four years.

But the mourning members left the graveside with a plan to tackle the mammoth task of responding to the country’s first hurricane in 65 years, their president told Barbados TODAY.

Former president Mark Wark was buried at the Westbury Cemetery on Saturday after a service in the Coral Ridge Memorial Gardens chapel.

“A very, very rough weekend for the team,” Jefferson Bovell, his successor and Operation Officer of the Roving Response Team said.

“The hard part at the gravesite on Saturday, we actually did a roll call during which we called each other’s number by radio and when we got to his, there was silence. It actually brought tears to everyone’s eyes, every member of the team started to cry… it was a very sad moment.”

Bovell described Ward, 59, as a ”great, great asset to the team.

He added: “He was a person that if you gave him a task to do he always made sure it was done and done to the end and in being the president of the team too,

He also took care of our communication. He had a love for radio communication. He would make sure that all our radio equipment was working and all our repeaters were working and up to date… He will be greatly missed by the team.”

The team actually formulated their response plan to Hurricane Elsa in the Westbury graveyard, Bovell said.

“We just pull ourselves together and set out to go and do what we have to do to help others. We know that this is something that he would want us to do.”

Formed in 1995 and registered a charity three years later, the Roving Response Team provides civilian support to the Department of Emergency Management with trained and equipped personnel in planning for the threat of natural or man-made hazards or responding to their impact.
