Significant progress has been made in repairing properties damaged by Hurricane Elsa’s passing three weeks ago.

Giving an update on the work being done by Government, Prime Minister Mia Mottley revealed that assessments had been completed on 64 per cent of the damaged properties.

Mottley said that 2177 houses were damaged when the weather system struck on July 2, with the majority of those properties located in St Michael (475), Christ Church (411), St Philip (288) and St George (284).

“Of the 2177 cases, we’ve completed assessments on 1391 and those assessment teams are constituted with engineers, project managers, quantity surveyors, people who are versed in this task,” the Prime Minister assured.

She said of that number, 352 houses would have to be rebuilt from scratch while 968 houses would be repaired.

Mottley said 18 persons had requested materials rather than having their houses rebuilt or repaired.

She said work had begun in Lammings, Parks Road and Hillswick Village in St Joseph; Green Hill, Black Rock and Goodland in St Michael, Broomfield, Well Road and Hope Road in St Lucy and Orange Hill Development in St James.

“So you can see that a significant amount of work has been done. The Government and Cabinet is very clear, those persons who are below the poverty line we will continue to support as has been the policy of the Government of Barbados. Those persons who are above the poverty line will enter into arrangements with us whether it is rent to own or if they can get their own mortgage, but those discussions will be kept separately,” she said.

“It is against that backdrop that we expect a significant amount of work to be done. We’ve actually seen the start and in relation to the contracts that have been assigned, there are 19 new builds that are already in progress and with respect to contracts being issued, 121 of the new builds have been assigned by the UDC [Urban Development Commission] and 160 have been assigned thus far by the RDC [Rural Development Commission]. We expect separately that because we are only at 64 per cent that we are going to see more new builds required beyond the 352.”

She said Government would purchase 150 houses to be used by “new technology”.

Mottley said the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elderly Affairs had so far assigned locations for 188 persons who were in need of temporary accommodation.
