Barbadians can expect much of the same wet weather that affected the island Thursday throughout the weekend.

In a typical October scenario across the island, there were heavy downpours, sharp bursts of thunder and frequent bright lightning. The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) had issued a severe thunderstorm watch Thursday morning.

Eyewitnesses reported sightings of fork lighting in Oistins, Christ Church and Stadium Road, St Michael.

In the north, residents reported persistent rainfall.

In a weather statement issued in the evening, the BMS alerted the public to expect heavy rainfall that could lead to flooding and thunderstorms in the coming days.

The Met Office said: “Rainfall accumulations are likely to peak over the weekend as the combination of a trough system and a tropical wave is forecast to affect the island.”

It advised that intermittent scattered moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected throughout this period with rainfall accumulations of three to six inches and isolated higher amounts are possible.

The met office said the activity would warrant the issuing of watches and warnings at short notice. It, therefore, urged the public to continue to stay alert for official updates. (SD)
