Before I deal with an alarm being raised, it has only just occurred to me that maybe I did not get the message in relation to the tall trees and bush at 154 Ealing Park South about which I complained previously.

The ‘penny dropped’ when I was reminded of a district in New York called Flatbush. Oh ho, that’s what Environment is trying to achieve – flat bush. Cut it and leave it on the ground. I digress.

It seems to me that a number of people are sounding an alarm about our change to Republican status much like the cry about severe weather or storm expected – “Republic Coming!”

hey say not enough time/notice has been given. Well I believe former Prime Minister, Owen Arthur had begun plans for the switch. In fact, I understand he had even commissioned a ‘Song for the Republic’ for which the artiste was paid. He even had parliamentary research done to chart the process. He chose not to move forward.

I don’t know if the present government has followed what the previous research indicated or if they considered it too ‘dated.’

To me, the most fundamental change shall be the fact that the President, Prime Minister and Ministers will no longer swear allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen and her heirs nor are they to be “governed” by the ‘dictates of the British monarchy.’

So, it’s too soon. It’s rushed. It’s in a pandemic. If it’s too soon, when might have been a good time? Too rushed – what would have changed – the constitution?

Changes to constitutions take place all the time. It’s in a pandemic. Do you know when the pandemic is going to be abated or disappear?

Remember when the group calling itself “The Under- Forties” campaigned against Barbados going into independence alone? We went forward alone. Constitutional changes of government can throw up challenges which have to be met.

The day after the change what shall you do? What did you do the day after the statue of Nelson came down? After the change I believe we shall go on as before, and in the second instance we have gone on as before.

I have to warn, however, that if there is to be an alarm sounded it is to be for the coming earth changes – not just climate change but changes coming from God’s creature – the earth. More anon.
