In his letter to an abolitionist in 1849, Frederick Douglass contended that “the limits of tyrants are observed by the endurance of those they oppress”.

It has been encouraging to hear the voice of a popular clergyman expressing disgust over one of Prime Minister Mottley’s recent actions. Interesting in his denouncement was the call for the church to raise its voice in protest to the drop in ethics, morals and standards.

In a recent article in his weekly column, Richard Hoad remarked: “It’s clever to ram a republic down our throats on the pretext it is only a cosmetic change and now we hear some want a godless people’s republic”.

The columnist noted that crime and killings are rampant, justice stalled, agriculture suffering, tourism struggling, and debt piling up. One could add dismantling of education, confusion in housing, slow death of small businesses, and fatigue in the health sector.

While these maladies are affecting the mental and physical well-being of the nation, Mottley is busy building memorials and parks. Nothing is wrong with building monuments, but the timing and motivation remain misplaced priority considerations.

In the meantime, not a word is said about the Hyatt project that led to the hasty destruction of Ms Ram’s store. In all this, the media finds news that paint Mottley and her team as modern-day gladiators.

The return of Walter Blackman to the ritualistic daytime call-in programs too many is refreshing, but the constant haranguing from noted Mottley fans reduces the potential of the program to engage the public in an ongoing analysis of the events. But relying on a call-in program is not good enough.

The clergyman’s call for more intervention from the church is timely, as there is clear evidence that the church is under attack.

The recent disclosure of a new focus for Codrington College is another signal of the direction Mottley is heading.

Returning to Douglass, he once stated that: “Power concedes nothing without a demand.

It never did and never will.” Mottley demanded from Barbados to give me and watch me, and Barbadians are watching and enduring. More and more Barbadians have gone from watching to praying.

One can only hope it is to God they are praying!
