QEH fixes morgue issues

At least two of the complaints recently expressed by some workers at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) have been addressed says Health Service Administrator Louise Bobb.

She told Barbados TODAY that “all fridges are working and the two death carts have been put back into service”.

Her comment followed recent complaints by two senior members of staff who drew attention to the “chronic” break down of the refrigerators used for storage of human corpses and the absence of functional ‘death’ carts. Regarding the latter, the sources, who spoke on  condition of anonymity, said ingenuity had to be employed by orderlies to either convert trolleys from the Accident and Emergency Department or use the same beds a patient may have died on a “death cart”.

There are 34 refrigerators, plus an additional two used only for the storage of limbs and babies, in the mortuary. Last week, Bobb admitted that the eight-body fridge had a problem but was fixed when the valve was replaced, while they were working to correct the issues with the six-body fridge. At that time, Bobb rejected the notion that the malfunctioning of the equipment was “chronic”.

There were also complaints regarding faulty hoists used to lift patients. The QEH source alleged that the majority do not work and “the few on the ward that work hardly anyone knows how to use them”.  According to both sources, these problems have been ongoing for a while and has been brought to the attention of the hospital’s hierarchy before without any action taken. And they alleged that, “unless you are doctors, senior members or consultants your complaints will go on deaf ears”. (KC)
