Barbados’ top international boxer Cobia ‘Soldier’ Breedy said since being back home, he has received lots of love and support as he spent time giving back to communities, schools and clubs.

The 30-year-old who was born in Barbados but lives in Hyattsville, Maryland arrived in the country just before Christmas and could not be happier with the love and support he has received from those he came into contact with while touring the island.

“A lot of people in Barbados have been stopping and telling me they love what I am doing and to keep making Barbados proud. I actually went to the Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme where I started my journey and they are proud of me and what I am doing and assured me I have their support.

“I also went to my alma mater Princess Margaret Secondary School and donated some tablets and some masks for the kids. We went to the homeless shelter and donated some stuff there. We also went to my old boxing gym located at the Stadium and Shaka Henry also has a gym and we donated some stuff there. I am just trying to give back to the community and especially the young upcoming boxers,” Breedy told Barbados Today.

During the interview he added, “Right now I just want more support to help these athletes develop. I left home to be great and the kids need help financially, physically, mentally and while I can’t help everybody, I can help as many kids as possible. Whether it is a speech, inspiration or whatever, I just want to leave my legacy and give people hope that I came up here from this rock Barbados and now I am over in the United States doing great things in this short space of time with my career and I still have a long way to go.

“When a person sees a Barbadian doing well they appreciate that and love it because they know there are not many of us with the exception of myself or even Rhianna make it out to be great. Everybody was saying that the door for boxing in Barbados was closing but my brother Jabali Breedy and I brought some light back to the sport.”

A force to reckoned with in the featherweight division, Breedy currently has a 15-1 record and is scheduled to fight Sulaiman Segawa of Uganda on February 19th, 2022 for the World Boxing Council Intercontinental Championship.

Barbadian international boxer Cobia Breedy (center) donated electronic tablets and other devices to various places across the country.

Speaking about the upcoming fight against Segawa which had to be rescheduled because of an accident that occurred during the fight, Breedy said, “I definitely want to promote this fight in Barbados while I am here. I have been promoting it and trying to link up with media personnel on the island. I have one more week here and I am trying to promote my fight.”

As it relates to his future plans, having had the opportunity to meet with representatives of the Barbados Boxing Association, Breedy says he plans to start his own boxing gym.

While he is not yet sure as yet whether his focus will be to train other boxers, he is certain that one of these days he will give back in a major way.

He explained, “I don’t know if I would be physically training people, I don’t know if that is what I want to do right now but I know for sure one of these days I am going to open a gym for some kids to help develop them. That is one thing I plan to do and hopefully one day I can come together with some people in Barbados and make it happen. Hopefully get these kids off the streets because they need things to do and everybody can’t be a doctor or a lawyer.”
