Hearings in Constitutional motion to resume on February 25

Madam Justice Cicely Chase Friday adjourned hearings into the constitutional motion brought by former Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite until February 25.

At today’s proceedings, the Government, represented by a battery of prominent attorneys including Leslie Haynes QC; Roger Forde QC and Alrick Scott QC, made their submissions, while Garth Patterson QC who is representing Brathwaite presented his own.

Brathwaite is asking the court to declare that the Senate is not properly constituted under Section 36 of the Constitution, with only 18 of 21 members installed and therefore the Parliament of Barbados is not properly constituted and should not have been reconvened.

The legal teams are expected to file written submissions by February 23.
