Human Trafficking Education Campaign launching soon

Within a few days, Government will roll out a campaign to sensitise and educate the public about human trafficking.

The campaign will be launched on Wednesday, March 9, and Attorney General Dale Marshall will deliver the feature address.

Mr. Marshall stressed the importance of the sensitisation and education campaign, which targets all members of the society, including primary school children and visitors.

In a statement issued on the World Day Against Trafficking on July 30, 2021, Attorney General Marshall said Government was committed to continuing the fight against human trafficking.

“Government has made human trafficking a priority….  Our legislation and approach to human trafficking is victim centred…covering costs of victims’ repatriation to their home country, providing shelter, medical assistance and legal aid….

“We have developed indicators to assist in detecting and investigating potential cases of human trafficking with the assistance of our international partners,” he stated.

Human trafficking has been described by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of people through force, fraud or deception, with the aim of exploiting them for profit.

“Men, women and children of all ages and from all backgrounds can become victims of this crime, which occurs in every region of the world. The traffickers often use violence or fraudulent employment agencies and fake promises of education and job opportunities to trick and coerce their victims,” the UN website stated.  (BGIS)
