A jury will on Thursday begin hearing evidence in the trial of a man accused of unlawfully killing his father a decade ago.

An adjournment was given on Wednesday after Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Alliston Seale gave his opening address before empanelled jurors and Madam Justice Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell in the case against Renaldo Mikhail Trotman, of Greenpark Lane, St Michael.

Trotman is accused of manslaughter in the March 23, 2012 death of his father, Sylvan Trotman.

In his address, Seale urged jurors to listen to the evidence carefully to determine the facts, and not to speculate.

“Listen to the evidence, don’t expect that it will work like CSI  . . . . This is not TV, this is the real world. So you have to listen to the witnesses,” the prosecutor implored the jurors as he went on the say that the case against the accused was a “straightforward” one.

The Deputy DPP said the state’s case was that on the mentioned date, the accused went to his father’s house and there was a disagreement between the two. It escalated to a physical altercation but that was subsequently was quelled by another son. However, tempers were still running high and Trotman said something to the accused, infuriating him.

According to the prosecutor, the accused slapped his father on the side of his face, knocking him off the step he was standing on and onto the ground where he fell, struck his head and died.

The accused tried to revive him.

“Listen to every one of the witnesses, hear what these witnesses have to say, and make your determination based on the evidence and nothing other than the evidence,” Seale urged.
