The Sage Bar in Maxwell, Christ Church, was recently transformed into a poetry amphitheatre as well-established poets, new poets and poetry enthusiasts shared their poems to an accommodating audience at the Poetry Lime Reloaded.

Patrons were treated to an energetic performance from Cibecca who performed I Like To Wuk Up, the piece which highlights her love for Crop Over and examines some of the problems she has with enjoying the Crop Over season. The poem had the audience roaring as they enjoyed hook line and title.

Also riveting was the performance from National Library Service Poetry Slam Champion 2022 Stonedwithcupid who
treated the audience to his winning piece Family Affair.

The poem examined the reasons why human beings have abused Mother Earth and suggested that Earth should arrest humankind for the way in which they have been treating her. The piece had members of the audience that included NIFCA Gold Awardee
Adrian Greene highly impressed.

Deo The Poet tugged on the heartstrings of the audience as he performed his poem One Story Three Point of Views. The poem explained the reasons why persons do crime and why sometimes the justice system fails the most vulnerable in society. He received a hug after his emotional performance from Taitu Heron at the end of his performance, as she identified with some of the themes presented.

Consummate performer Cyndi Celeste who recently returned from Washington DC where she was a part of the Barbados contingent that travelled to perform at Passport DC, treated the audience to her Badu, a poem which is featured on her EP Cyndicated.

The poem examined blackness and how there is strength not only in black culture but also in the way that black persons
wear their hair.

Fans also delighted in a performance from La Shawna who shared a piece Black Friday from her latest poetry release Melanin Drops. The poem examines the history of Black Friday and how many persons of African descent have forgotten their history.

Founder of Frenetic Arts Luci Hammans also gave a sensational performance of her piece Don’t Let The Fair Skin Fool You! The piece had members of the audience on their feet as she explained how some persons are quick to judge her because of her complexion but after a few minutes, they realise that she is an authentic Barbadian.

In the piece, she utilised Bajan dialect to get her points across which had the audience roaring, standing, and at some points unsure what to do with themselves as they enjoyed the performance.

The Frenetic Arts team comprises Founder Hammans, project manager Celeste, digital engagement manager Akeem Chandler-Prescod, PRO La Shawna Griffith and executive assistant Theo Greenidge, as well as honorary members Faith Amber Johnson and Nicholas Boyce.

Speaking to the media following the completion of the event, Hammans said that Frenetic Arts decided to relaunch poetry lime as a safe space for creatives was needed in the poetry community.

“People really love the space and the community it provided and with the onset of COVID-19, I knew this community was still missing and needed this environment where they can navigate all their difficult emotions and be united in this one moment of camaraderie as well as experience catharsis,” she said.

Hammans who is a Theatre Arts practitioner, poet and playwright, said that she was pleased with the attendance of over 75 persons as Frenetic Arts seeks to become the leading spoken word organisation in Barbados.

“Our hopes are to provide opportunities for these incredible artistes who have mastered the gift of Barbadian oral traditions – storytelling and literary prowess.

:We want to provide opportunities for these artistes not only nationally but regionally and internationally as well. Our hope is to engage more in video content and start documenting this pulse that is spoken word in Barbados and the voice that it has.

All of the performers cannot be accused of sounding like anyone else as they have their own unique voices and Poetry Lime Reloaded provided the perfect place to hear those voices. So, if you want to hear the authentic voice of Caribbean artistry then Poetry Lime is the place for you.

Poetry Lime Reloaded also had performances from Josue Ramirez Nelson, Nya, Ceana, Joshua Moore, N.E.C. Taitu Heron, Rhyminister and Zoe Sunshine.
