Technical challenges that occurred in the testing phase of registration for the new Trident ID Card are being resolved, and the next phase in which the general public can sign up will begin on Monday as scheduled.

That’s according to Minister of Industry, Innovation, Science and Technology Davidson Ishmael who said personnel in his ministry had utilised additional resources to deal with the challenges, so there could be a seamless rollout process next week.

The Electoral and Boundaries Commission (EBC) conducted a pilot exercise from June 13 to 24 which was open to public officers only.

Speaking during the launch of a Clean and Green initiative in Husbands Development, St James on Friday, the final day of the testing phase, Ishmael said: “I must say that myself and my team are very pleased with how things have been going. Of course, these projects don’t go without hiccups. We have had some challenges along the way; we’ve heard from some of the public about some unusually long waiting times, less than palatable waiting times, and it is something that we have already sought to put things in place to address.

“We believe that this testing phase over these last two weeks has given us enough information that we can now make some adjustments over the weekend…. We believe that we have learned quite a few lessons that would help us to improve the system, improve the offering that we are making to the public, and I am sure that the public will be able to have a much better experience coming into the 27th,” he added.

However, Ishmael said, there may still be some delays, and he has therefore urged the public to exercise patience.

“We believe because of the numbers of persons that would be looking to get cards registered or re-registering themselves for the ID cards, the sheer numbers and the sheer volume of individuals will present some challenges for us, so we are asking persons to bear with us and exercise a high degree of patience,” he said.

“If you have 20 or 30 people at a centre, it may be manageable and persons will be able to get out – as many persons have reported to me – in 10 minutes, but if you have over 200 people turning up at a centre, then you may have a little longer wait period.”

Registration will be conducted using the surname system, with two weeks for each category.

Minister Ishmael said that persons who are unable to visit any of the 22 registration sites around the island can register online at trident.gov.bb.

Details about the assigned dates for registration and other information about registration for the Trident ID card can also be found on that website.
