Barbados captains Sumairaa Suleman and Darien Benn along with Eboni Atherley have all secured their places in the final of the ongoing 2022 Junior Caribbean Area Squash Association Championships (CASA).

Currently being played at the Georgetown Club Facility and National Racquet Centre in Woolford Avenue, Non Pareil Park, Guyana, the strong Barbadian contingent continued to hold its own on day two of the competition yesterday.

Captain of the Barbados team Sumairaa Suleman came from behind to pull off a hard-fought 3-2 victory 9 -11,11-8, 11-3, 8 -11, 11-9 against Abosaide Cadogan of Guyana in what was an Under-19 thriller. In doing so Suleman has set herself a date in the final against Kirsten Gomes of Guyana.

Benn, captain of the Barbados boys’ team, won in straight sets 11-5, 11-6, 11-8 against Sa Ince-Carvahal of Guyana to reach the Under-19 final. He will face hometown boy Shomari Wiltshire  in their age group final.

Barbados could win the Under-17 Division once all goes well for Eboni Atherley in the final. Atherley won her semifinal encounter 11-3, 11-4, 11-3 against Sanjana Nallipati of Jamaica. She has advanced into the finals where she is expected to play Katherine Risden of Jamaica.

In the Under-17 Girls consolation tournament, Savannah Thompson of Jamaica defeated Barbadian Joanna Atkins 11-3, 11-1, and 11- 5.

Alex Stewart narrowly missed out on a place in the Under-17 Boys final for Barbados. Stewart won 11-5, 11-4, and 11-8 over Andrew Cox but then lost 3-1 against Michael Alphonso of Guyana (11-2, 11-1, and 11-2) in the semifinals.

Stewart, who is also a national lawn tennis player, will now play Seth Thong of Trinidad and Tobago for the third-place spot. Playing the consolation tournament Calem Maloney won 11-4, 11-3, and 11-3 when he took on fellow Barbadian Dominic Marquez. Maloney also defeated Nathan Rahaman of Guyana 11-3, 11-4, 11-0 and will face off in the consolation final against Dominic Wilson who is also representing Barbados. Dominic earned his place when he trounced his twin brother Luke 3-1 when they met.

In the under 15 Girls consolation tournament, Sarrayah Yearwood of Barbados won 11-6, 11-5, 11-4 over Malia Mikoo. But fortune did not favour fellow Barbadian Mariella Young who lost 11-6, 11-5, and 11-4 against Olivia Sherratt of Bermuda.

Jules O’Garro of Barbados competed in the Under-15 Boys age group and lost 11-2, 11-1, and 13-11 when he met Eli Carpol of Bermuda in the quarterfinals. Additionally, Ben King of Barbados lost 11-6, 11-7, and 11-3 competing against Marcus Campins of Trinidad.

Sadly, Ben Shepherd and Daniel Sealy of Barbados both lost their respective semifinal matches and will play for the third position in the Under 13 Boys showdown. Shepherd suffered defeat 11-5, 11-8, 11-3 playing Owen Rosorea of Bermuda. Sealy also found the going tough, 11-5, 11-1, and 11-2, taking on Jayden George of St. Kitts and Nevis.

There was something to smile about when Barbadian Lena Hamati won 11-2, 11-3 and 11-9 challenging Emily Fung of Guyana to reach the finals in the consolation tournament. morissalindsay@barbadostoday.bb
